Hello. I’m Chad Lewine. I build websites for small businesses. I’ve been building them all my life. A website is a property you own and control. It’s different from social media. You don’t own that. You’ll always need a website. I build them. Let’s build a virtual homebase for your company.

While many slow down during economic shifts, some speed up. Stop hiding from the web. Build your website. Come out ahead.

Website Design & Digital Marketing for Small Businesses

Navigating the web design world can be overwhelming. If you don’t have experience in the industry, it can easily be confusing, contradictory and downright scammy. But you’ve found me, so relief is on the way.

Many of my clients find their way to me after dissatisfying experiences with fancy agencies, offshore cheapies, family members or part-time freelancers. I’ll work with you to solve your website woes and increase your faith in humanity. Well, faith in web designers at least.

What separates me from other designers/consultants?

I have been active online since I was nine years old. You could say I’m part of a digital latchkey generation. One of the first to grow up completely immersed in the web, albeit the early stages of it. I designed and sold my first website for a Philadelphia area author in 2002 for $75. I was 12 years old.  The internet is second nature to me. I was on all the sites I could find, modifying them and learning all that I could. I was known throughout my school as the web design kid. I eventually turned that into a career path and went to college for web design (way before it was trendy.)

My combination of client relations, business acumen and technical web design and marketing skill is not too common in one person. These traits allow me to help my clients understand their digital marketing initiatives in down-to-Earth, non-techie language and concepts.  Additionally, I’m fully transparent; highly communicative, I don’t answer questions with boiler plate responses and I don’t make promises without all the info.

Each business, client and project is different. A collection of different pieces must come together to form a complete result. I provide flexible services and maintain an understanding that it may take multiple solutions to fulfill your needs. While my work is based on the foundation of web design, SEO and digital marketing, the scope of how I can help extends beyond that. There is not a one-size-fits-all fix for most things in life, marketing included.

Client Reviews

Chad has been doing our graphic and web design for over 4 years at Brooklyn Bazaar and Riis Park Beach Bazaar. His design sense is awesome and he always provides great suggestions with good insight on what will work for our biz. Always super responsive, really fast worker and all around great guy. Love ya Chad!

Aaron Broudo, Brooklyn Night Bazaar

Recently I was looking for a web designer for a webpage that needed a make over and was fortunate to find Chad! Chad has been amazing to partner with. He understood the message I was trying to express with the website, was responsive to all of my questions, had super cool ideas to add and did all of this in a timely and affordable manner. Chad is awesome and my newly designed website is gorgeous!

Judi S., Kindness Champions (Rochester, NY)

Talented, responsive and understands the big picture. Chad was able to develop a sophisticated corporate site that in relatively short order was ranking top 3 organically on Google. He ask’s the right questions and crafts solutions based on your needs and desired outcome. Best bang for your buck and quality execution in a business that has a lot of fakers!

Joshua G, JG Realty

Highly recommended! We needed Chad to build a website that could allow customers to sign in for classes in sessions, pay by installment, read blogs etc… and he delivered! He went above and beyond and got our start- up on the first pages of search engines thanks to his great work with SEO. He made research to find the perfect payment portal, put my social media pages together, worked relentlessly to get our start up going. He is a great consultant and really helped when we were in doubt.

Magda Lahliti, Learn French Brooklyn

We used Chad to build our new website. I had a very specific look I was going for, and even though I was pretty bad at articulating it, Chad nailed it. He is competent, patient and has a lot of great ideas. I will definitely use him again on future projects.

Greg Gartland, CybrMotion

I was looking for a company/person to help me build an interactive website for my business. A website that would allow my clients to purchase subscriptions and such. After interviewing several other companies, I became disappointed in other companies lack of effort for a potential customer. Chad was very informative and knew exactly what I needed and was able to build my website to exactly how I wanted . Not only that, the website continues to grow with newer ideas thanks to Chad and his knowledge of what his customers needs and wants are. Chad is very professional, talented and skilled. He does not try to sell you on products or services that you don’t need. He keeps everything on point.

Kimberly Dolan, K.I.M. Keep It Moving (Philadelphia, PA)

Chad went above and beyond building our company’s high end website and exceeded our expectations with the final product. He is super easy to communicate with and very responsive to our many questions. He has also been a great deal of help consulting on all aspects of rebranding, marketing and SEO.

I’ve worked with Chad for the last four months. He updated and rebuilt my website, and expanded my social media presence a thousand fold. He’s great to work with and had many creative ideas. I highly recommend working with him.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) For Your Website

From Neil Patel: a leading global SEO expert:

“SEO is a details game. Can you imagine the consequences to your SEO if Google’s crawler stops visiting your website as often? Well… this is about to happen. Google is considering reducing emissions in a major way.

Crawling and indexing are all virtual, and at that scale (1.5 billion websites), it takes a major toll on the environment. Now, Google is considering crawling websites less frequently because of that.

What does that mean? It means it’ll take a while for those crawlers to come back around. So it’s essential that you nail your SEO now. Otherwise, you’ll be waiting a while to get found online.”

Let’s get your website SEO up to par and optimize your website for search, ASAP!

Live WordCamp NYC Presentation by Chad Lewine

About My Rate & Fees

I’ve been working professionally as a web designer and digital marketing consultant since 2011. My value comes from not only what I am able to produce, but the education, communication and general client experience I provide along the way.

Flat Rate Projects

Flat rates are employed when a project has a clear start and end point. Website project fees are case by case, so please inquire if you might think we are a good fit.

  • Starting at $3,200 – Websites for operating businesses
  • Starting at $1,500 – Simpler websites for startups and solopreneurs
  • Starting at $800 – Websites for authors

Hourly

Hourly rates are employed when a client doesn’t have a defined scope, needs my services in small bursts over a period of time, or wants to start chipping away at a bigger project in phases without committing to a flat rate. My hourly rates are based on the annual revenue of a client.

  • $100/hr – Passion projects, soloprenuers, authors, non-profits or startup companies with no financial backing.
  • $125/hr – Revenue of up to $100,000
  • $150/hr – Revenue of $100,000 – $999,999
  • $200/hr – Revenue of $1,000,000+

For hourly projects I bill in blocks of 5 hours, from which I can pull down time in as little as 10 minutes. This allows for more accurate tracking of time worked and tasks completed.

5-10 hour blocks expire in 6 months
10+ hour blocks expire in 8 months
Hours cannot be converted to cash for third party expenses.

If you just want the short answer, it’s because clients take advantage, whether they mean to or not.

My hours expire because:
I am a one-person operation and after years of getting shafted or threatened in myriad ways, I’ve learned that when I allow time purchased a year ago to be used “today,” I lose. I also can’t logistically afford to work for 1 hour/$100 at a time – I lose there as well – hence the minimum block of hours.

Most web design companies are far from as transparent and flexible as I am. I have a client that, before me, was paying $1,000/month (yes, a month) for essentially nothing but hosting. Because of my flexibility and reachability, I have learned that clients (whether intentionally or not) take advantage of me if I don’t set terms outright.

These two terms (minimum purchase and expiration) set expectations and commitments for both parties.

My Commitment
For me, it’s a commitment that I’ll turn on a dime and provide white-glove service for a client within this time period, while also giving me peace of mind knowing that the service commitment is not indefinite. This also prevents clients from asking for “unused” money back. I (literally) cannot afford to give money back for any reason.

Client Commitment
For the client, it’s a commitment that they will take a vested interest in my services and will utilize me to further their business/project/initiative. When clients take themselves seriously, they take me seriously. A set duration also allows for a higher quality service to be rendered since there is familiarity with my client’s active situation.

This set duration also protects you because I am a one-person show and I have the free will to decide to stop doing this at any time. Even if I wanted to stop providing my services today or take a 3 month break, these terms hold me to seeing through any outstanding commitments.

Baseline Maintenance Plan

If you don’t need regular updates made to the content or appearance of your site, I require most clients to verbally agree to a semi-annual baseline maintenance plan of $500 every 6 months. This allows me to keep their site’s themes, plugins and server updated regularly so it doesn’t break down or become open to attack. It takes some time each month to keep those things up to date. If they aren’t updated for a year, the chance of something going wrong increases with each passing day. It’s cheaper to pay the baseline than to fix problems caused by neglecting a website. This also includes minute changes like swapping a photo, text or other small content every month or so.

Day Rate

My date rate is $700. Hire me for 6 working hours between 9am – 9pm Eastern. I’ll be available to do a blitz on web or graphics for an upcoming event or pitch, clean up your website, edit or spruce up a brochure, add a new web page, build an email automation, etc. You’ll have my skills at your disposal for the whole day.

Third Party Fees

Hosting

WordPress web hosting is $20-30/month. I prefer to host my client’s websites on WPengine, but can work with ultimately any host.

Hosting with other platforms like Squarespace, WIX and Shopify vary from free to $30 or more.

Domain Name

Your .com or similar costs, on average, $10-30/year. Usually you get a discount for buying multiple years on the initial purchase.

Themes

All WordPress sites require the purchase of a theme license that averages a one-time purchase of $100. Shopify and Squarespace have free and paid themes. We will discuss those options case by case.

Refund Policy

I do not issue refunds for any reason. Once payment is received, it is non-refundable, no exceptions. This is because all engagements I undertake always have substantial build-up period in which expectations and terms are explicitly expressed and agreed upon. I am a one-person low-cash-flow operation and cannot afford to be held responsible for indecision, unrealistic expectations or mismanaged finances.
